Architecture, Art and “Cashflow”
New spaces and modes for structuring urban culture in Berlin.
The venue bar Kosmetiksalon Babette, located on Karl-Marx-Allee, provides a lens focussing on architectural history, urban development and the impact of gentrification of buildings with cultural utilization. The landlord of the building, Bergruen Holdings, will terminate the rental agreement by September 2018, after 15 years at Karl-Marx-Allee 36. This incident has led the Bar Babette initiative to organise a symposium and panel discussion seeking to clarify the scope for alternative action and strategies for a lively, affordable urban culture in Berlin. Together with professionals from the fields of art, music, club-culture, the independent scene, urban development, architecture, politics, administration and real estate industry, we seek to find and debate constructive methods of resolution.
