Currently, the use of timber is widely discussed as an ecologically sustainable, cost and time-effective way to densify our cities. Thanks to contemporary pre-fabrication and construction techniques, even timber skyscrapers are possible; some are already being realised. With a diverse range of typologies – from the Immanuel Church in Cologne and the Hager Forum in Alsace, to the world’s largest student housing complex constructed from modular timber in Hamburg – Sauerbruch Hutton is exploring the potential of this traditional building material. In their most recent timber project – the rooftop extension of a GDR prefab for the Berlin Metropolitan School – the architects will talk about current trends and opportunities with other pioneers and specialists, discussing the architectural and urban qualities of modular pre-fabricated timber constructions.
