Keynote: Sabine Junginger, Hertie School of Governance Head, Lucerne Applied University of Sciences and Arts - Art and Design

Sabine Junginger is internationally recognized for her work on organizations, management, and human-centered design. She is particularly interested in how policy-makers and public managers employ design thinking, design processes, design practices and design methods when they develop and implement public policies and public services.

She currently heads the Competence Center Design & Management at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts – Design & Art and regularly serves on advisory boards of governmental public sector innovation labs. Her current appointments include Research Fellow of the Hertie School of Governance (Germany); Academic Advisor to the European Forum Alpbach (Austria) and member of the Research Committee of the Free University Bozen. She is also former member of the advisory boards of Mindlab (Denmark), and GovDesign (Australia). Previous academic positions include Lecturer and founding member of ImaginationLancaster at Lancaster University (UK) and Associate Professor, the Kolding School of Design, Denmark.

Sabine Junginger holds a PhD in Design from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, as well as a Master in Communication Planning and Information Design. She is the author of Transforming Public Services by Design: Re-Orienting Policies, Organizations and Services around People (Routledge 2017) and the co-editor of Designing Business and Management (Bloomsbury 2016), Highways and Byways to Innovation (University of Southern Denmark/Design School Kolding 2014) as well as of The Handbook of Design Management (Bloomsbury 2011).

Most recently, she has been chosen by the Joint Research Committee’s EU Policy Lab in Brussels to lead a student project on the Future of Government with BA students in Design Management International at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences. In 2016, she led an EU-Brazil Sectorial Dialog project with Brazil’s Ministry of Planning, Budget and Development involving cross-governmental innovation. She is also a founding member and chair of the initiative Politics for Tomorrow, Berlin.
