2018 marks the 28th year of German reunification – the same amount of time that the Berlin Wall (1961–1989) existed. On the occasion of this parallel, GRAFT partners Thomas Willemeit, Wolfram Putz, and Lars Krückeberg – together with the former Federal Commissioner for the Records of the State Security Service of the former German Democratic Republic, Marianne Birthler – have curated the exhibition Unbuilding Walls for the German Pavilion at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, shown from May to November 2018. The exhibition responds to current debates on nations, protectionism, and borders. It explores the effects of division, and the process of healing as a dynamic spatial phenomenon. Outstanding examples of urban and architectural design question historical as well as current barriers, and address aspects of division and integration. Concepts and selections from Unbuilding Walls will be presented by the curators in their office in Berlin-Mitte.
