“He is finished!” — so Adolf Loos concludes his famous satire The Poor Little Rich Man, where an architect was commissioned to rebuild and furnish a house from scratch. When finally everything was defined and installed, the owner — unable to change or develop anything further again — thinks “he is complete!”. Berlin was long considered as poor, but rich. After decades characterised by openness, it’s now heading towards completeness, as voids are disappearing, and space is getting rare, as are opportunities of experimentation. The Institute of Architecture and Urban Development at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) is searching for the unfinished in our urban environment and architecture. Two ephemeral pavilions, designed and produced by the institute and its students, will provide space for open discussions about the remaining — as well as newly developed — urban open space. Other institutions and courses of the UdK will contribute to reflecting on the principle of the unfinished. Let’s arrange for preserving Berlin as an open city, rather than letting it end up like Loos’ poor little rich protagonist.
