With an increasing shortage of affordable apartments in Berlin and a growing population, the demand for more housing is clear and unavoidable. As developers face demands to provide new housing within Berlin, how does this balance this against the city’s social and cultural responsibility towards creative community spaces?
Currently one of Berlin’s largest creative quarters, the Gerichtshöfe began in the early 1980s and is home to independent artists and small creative companies. However, after more than 30 years, these workspaces are facing an uncertain future as they negotiate against forced redevelopment into apartments and student housing.
From master violin makers to painters, join us for this guided tour of the Gerichtshöfe where we will take a peek inside some of Berlin’s most unique creative spaces, and to discuss the impact of Berlin’s growing population and urbanisation on cultural spaces like the Gerichtshöfe.
