“There is only one Thai Park in the world. And it is located in Berlin. It is so famous, to get rid of it would be like having a public campaign demanding the demolition of the Brandenburg Gate”. For more than 20 years, Thais and other South East Asians assemble on the turf of Preußenpark in Berlin Wilmersdorf to socialise, cook, and sell their food at the unauthorized (but tolerated) market. The fight for the vendors to stay put and the conflict over the market is almost as old as the Thai Park itself, and has taught vendors to form all kinds of alliances in order to resist the external forces that threaten their practice. In this tour, we trace the history of the conflict and affirmation of an informal food market in a small neighbourhood park, gaining insight into the everyday lives and struggles of the vendors, and offering the chance to feast on their infamous South East Asian delicacies.
