“He’s done!” Adolf Loos ends his famous satire “The Poor Little Rich Man”. This can be furnished by an architect his home. After extensive measures, every object is designed, everything defined, nothing left open – the client has no space for his further development, “he is complete!
For a long time Berlin was famous as a poor but rich city. After decades of openness, however, it is gradually moving towards the point of “completion”, because the free space is dwindling/ shrinking, space is becoming scarcer and more expensive, and the possibilities for experimentation are thus becoming less available.
During the week from 25 – 29 June, the Architecture Department of the Berlin University of the Arts will discuss its positions on teaching and research, theory and practice in architecture and urban development in a series of open conversations with students and the public. Heinrich Böll stated that man is unfinished, his city must therefore also be unfinished.
