Free spaces – which once made it possible for Berlin to grow into the capital of creativity and transgressive culture – have either become unaffordable, or vanished. A model of ‘interim use’ can incorporate the giving of spaces for creative work and unconventional ideas. But how is it possible to create free space and at the same time add value for a society, in an environment of short-term safety, a vague future, and financial limits? The current usage of the ‘Alte Münze’ and ‘Spreewerkstätten’ shows, for example, that a temporary solution can become more than provisional – a financially independent home to a colourful mix of art, culture, event spaces and young companies. Along with other actors of the citywide cultural and creative scene, the current users of ‘Alte Münze’ will discuss and give an insight on the opportunities and challenges of interim use.

2 OG is the experimental hub of independent cultural production at ‘Alte Münze’ Berlin, providing and curating space for artists and scientists to work and present. Together we focus on interdisciplinary ideas for a better and more positive future, city and society — as well as on the development and opening of the ‘Alte Münze’ area.
