We are experiencing a paradigm shift: Over the course of urbanisation, societal diversification and changes in mobility behaviour, new requirements are emerging for street spaces. While traffic is increasing in the growing metropolis of Berlin, initiatives for a city on a human scale, relieved from the pressure of cars, are being formulated. In its Urban Development Plan for Traffic (Stadtentwicklungsplan Verkehr), the Berlin Senate describes its vision for traffic reduction, regaining urban quality of life via the design of “static traffic”, as well as the reorganisation of street spaces. Streetscapes can work as multiple coded spaces, simultaneously creating social spaces for lingering and meeting, ecological biotopes, economic spaces, mobility spaces and places of political manifestation and representation. Various concrete proposals – from parklets to pedestrian zones and “meeting-spaces” (“Begegnungszonen”) – are currently being discussed and realised in Berlin. How does the street space of tomorrow look? What concepts and typologies should be developed? Together with speakers of various professions and perspectives we will illuminate the field of tensions around streetscapes and discuss visions for a new city.
