In Vietnamese, ‘Dong Xuan’ means ‘blossoming meadows’. The
Dong Xuan Center is also the name of the huge Asian Market in
Berlin-Lichtenberg. This market has developed into a small Vietnamese community
within the capital. Since being part of the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale
exhibition Arrival City at the German pavilion, the Dong Xuan Center has also gained popularity among the
architectural community. Music videos and fashion shootings take place here,
and it has also become a pop cultural phenomenon. Architectural firm plus4930
Sierig Geddert Krüger has been researching the structure of the market, and has
worked on specific architectural projects on-site since 2014. Of these
projects, the first to be realised was in 2017 — the ‘Guesthouse Dong Xuan’. As
part of the site visit, we will go to the market, the guesthouse, and offer an
overview of future developments.
