Around 400 modules are stacked into three long columns to comprise the student dormitory Frankie & Johnny in Treptow, Berlin. The COR-TEN steel containers are for the most part prefabricated, and have the appearance and size of overseas containers. The containers are shifted slightly towards the outside and inside to create a playful architecture, which at the same time acts as a metaphor for lively and vibrant forms of cooperative living. The High Cube Container 40‘, measuring 12.19m x 2.90m, is prefabricated as a modular system. The units can be connected into primarily single, but also double and double mini units. Students can spend time on the seating platforms in the ground floor’s central area between the two parts of the building, or chat on the access galleries. The latter in-between zone is a communicative place of meeting and exchange that serves as a common balcony at the same time. The compact buildings divide the site into two open spaces of different character. In addition to activity and sports areas there is a green oasis of spacious lawn and trees. The outdoor spaces form the heart of the complex, and its central meeting point. The name Frankie & Johnny stands for the residents – students from all parts of the globe – who live together in this one-of-a-kind location in Berlin.
