A tour of building cooperatives in Berlin asks the question: Is housing just about living, or can housing also have an impact on urban development? Building cooperatives and community living can influence urban space in different ways: promoting stable neighbourhoods, designing private and public spaces, offering models for innovative housing etc. This has implications not only architecturally, but also ecologically, economically and socially, affecting housing, modes of life and urban development. The tour visits projects that provide affordable housing within a pressured housing market while offering an opportunity for those involved to implement their own innovative ideas about housing on the basis of home ownership, rental apartments or alternative financial models such as cooperatives. We will visit building cooperatives that make a difference and that offer the potential for sustainable urban development.
