Changes in urban space are contributions to the identity of a place. The architect Thomas Kröger introduces his conceptual process via a selection of projects from rural and urban contexts. Three primary elements are of particular relevance: the context, the design tool and the archive. The aim is to develop a building that is integrated into its environment while also expanding it or reordering it. Within this field of possibility – from expansion to restructuring – it becomes possible to act within urban development, generating (new) identity that moves beyond the immediate relation to inhabitants or users. In this way, the familiar may be connected with the strange in such a way even inhabitants well-acquainted with the typology are surprised by this form of unstable narration.
