Working specifically with building in an urban context, we realise that density is only attractive in interplay with spatial openness and potential adaptability. Density always raises questions about public space. In light of this, what interests us is a methodology of omission – of so-called fragmentation – as an urban strategy. In our concepts, we pre-define only what we know – in housing, for example, this applies to the apartments. We leave everything else open as necessary gaps within the structure. Such gaps make appropriation possible, allowing, in turn, a lively public space to arise. The urban process thus remains open, the structure always only a fragment: nevertheless, in every instance a recognisable approach, a holistic concept, must always be perceptible.
