Left to construction firms and generic developers, residential suburban areas are constituted by the juxtaposition of single catalogue houses forming a homogeneous ensemble based on individual enclosed living and day to day commute. The transformation of the working habits as well as the expansion of cities to the periphery slowly rose the question of the necessary transformation and integration of those areas, becoming a new terrain for architects and planers to investigate and speculate upon. On both sides of the Rhine, two architectural offices have worked with students on scenarios for the development of those areas, from the scale of the object to the territorial one. Confronting the experience and results of the studios in France and Germany, the Empirical Working Group (Sebastien Martinez Barat and Joanne Pouzenc) meets the young architecture studio FAKT (Sebastian Ernst, Sebastian Kern, Martin Tessarz, Jonas Tratz) and No Image (Sebastian Weindauer and David Bauer) for a suburban empirical walk and talk.
