Following up on the panel discussion Architecture, Art & “Cashflow”, we look back to the roaring twenties in Berlin. Walter Ruttmann’s documentary Berlin: Symphony of a Metropolis looks behind the curtain of modern city life in the late 1920s. The film provides a sense of the speed and pulse of a lively metropolis in the early 20th century. A snapshot impression of the period between the two greatest catastrophes of European history, the film shows the beauty and fragility of human life in an vibrating, lively Berlin – not dissimilar to Berlin today. With its unconventional and uncompromising aesthetics, Walter Ruttmann’s film became a milestone in cinema history. ALP accompanies this masterpiece with a contemporary soundtrack with a mixture of electronic beats and classic instruments, including drums, bass and guitar.
