When they let reality melt together with fiction, adults can learn a lot from a child’s fantasies and ideas. ‘Die Baupiloten’ work with the images and wishes of children. Sometimes, very young children who can’t express themselves in words are nevertheless able to communicate through pictures. Imaginary characters or objects that accompany them as their friends throughout their day – a silver dragon, for instance – can be realised in a variety of ways, and transformed into architecture. For architects, a user’s knowledge regarding the experience and use of space is a fundamental insight in the architectural design process. The design method of our architectural practice includes the participation and involvement of the users, together with other stakeholders, in the process of design and planning. Based on the findings obtained from the participatory process, the architecture will be sequentially designed and planned. Depending on requirements, the users will also be involved in this process, through the use of ‘negotiation games’ developed by ‘Die Baupiloten’.
