As part of the renovation of the Berlin State Opera, HG Merz architects improved the acoustics of the concert hall. Designed to integrate into the overall appearance of the historic building, the reverberation gallery now connects the raised hall ceiling with the third balcony. The partition consists of a large sound-permeable open diamond lattice made of a phosphate ceramics. The parametrically designed pattern was robotically milled into moulds, which were filled with the ceramics. A glass fibre reinforcement ensures that the non-combustible material is statically self-supporting. For MakeCity, hg merz and Berlin State Opera provide the unique opportunity of getting close to this acoustic, constructive, and material innovation.
