With the Kulturpark Plänterwald, the GDR opened its only permanent amusement park in 1969, which was a major attraction until the fall of the Berlin Wall. After the reunification the park was privatized and operated from 1991 by the Spreepark GmbH, which, however, had to file for bankruptcy in 2001. Finally, the state of Berlin bought back the area and commissioned the state-owned Grün Berlin GmbH with the development of a sustainable utilization concept for the Spreepark.
As part of MakeCity Festival, visitors have the opportunity to visit sections of the closed park and learn more about the eventful history of the Spree Park from project managers at Grün Berlin GmbH in cooperation with the Bund Deutscher Landschaftsarchitekten bdla.
