Located in Rixdorf, Neukölln, Richardplatz embodies the classic configuration of a pre-war Berlin neighbourhood – sealed inner courtyards comprising of a Vorderhaus (“front house”) connected by wings to a Hinterhof (“behind house”) – with many now in need of urban repair. As a result of standards set out in the National Strategy on Biodiversity, these previously closed systems are opening up. The “AHOJ” project proposes to both reanimate and create new apartments at Böhmische Straße 53: courtyards are unsealed, previously impervious facades reclaimed and spaces are greened via integrated, self-irrigating planting systems. Though collaboration with the district management, the scheme creates a new life for the neighbourhood – without destroying the old one.
