Program

Buildings and cities demand constant adaptation. A city, as an open system, has to be able to evolve continuously. For this to happen, space for experimentation is needed as well as dynamic, multifaceted and tolerant development strategies. The Dutch architect MIT Professor John Habraken (b.1928) has been articulating these needs since the 1960s. In the film “De Drager”, which will be shown during the session, its Swiss directors Schwarz and Luethi portray John Habraken along with an illustration of his theory, focusing upon his own role as an architect and the impact of his theories upon the field. Following the viewing, the panel invite the audience to discuss both the potential – and accompanying challenges – of putting Open Architecture into practice.
