The Heinrich Böll Foundation is political thank tank for green ideas and projects, a reformist political future workshop and an international network. The foundation works with over a hundred partner projects in more than sixty countries and currently has offices in thirty of them. During Make City’s first year The Heinrich Böll Foundation is the festival's main sponsor and it has developed a discussion series of four events, which will take place at the Foundation’s headquarters located in Schumann Strasse 8.
How does discontent develop into political commitment? What are “urban commons” and in what ways should citizens be able to participate in them and the provision of public goods and services? During this matinee session, an international range of activists, urban planners and researchers will present projects that deal with empowerment and citizen participation from below. Addressing questions of citizen apathy, ways in which spontaneous action might be consolidated, and how best to ensure marginalised voices are heard by policy-makers, the group will attempt to locate the common ground between public participation and representative democracy.
