Ever since the last plane departed from the former Tempelhof Airport in 2008, the reuse of its buildings and the the vast green space of the airfield has attracted attention worldwide. Opened up as a much-loved communal space for the city in 2010, it has been the site of a dizzying range of cultural and sporting activities. In 2011 city planners proposed developing 25% of the site, with schemes including commercial properties, a library and housing. The latter of these proposals was to be \u2018affordable\u2019 \u2013 a promise may residents were suspicious of. In May 2014 a referendum was held and Berliners sent a clear message: keep Tempelhof as it is. In doing so, they preserve the unique character which has been brought to the site by these interim uses. <\/p>\n
