Prior to its now infamous labelling as “poor but sexy”, Berlin was the capital of energy production during the 1920s: Elektropolis. The architectural remnants of this era – power plants, sub-stations and other infrastructure buildings – are characterised by an aesthetic that is monumental in style, with clean linear forms lacking in ornamentation continuing to define the appearance of the cityscape, even today. As they have fallen into disuse, artists and other creative have been particularly proactive in appropriating the structures for new purpose. This tour examines the strategies employed to achieve this plus the preservation and conservation challenges such re-use of the historic industrial landscape brings.
