Berlin is increasingly witnessing the displacement of established, small-scale businesses to the urban peripheries. The Berlin mix (Berliner Mischung) – the dense juxtaposition of production, business, and housing in Berlin’s characteristic backyards – is an endangered model. At the same time current trends – such as urban self-help and self-sufficiency initiatives, stakeholders in urban manufacturing, or the new, decentral forms of digital production – bear the promise of a renewed consolidation of housing and inner-city production at ground level. Which concepts, practices and policies can achieve a successful integration of “making” and living in the city today?
