What is a public space? How should we develop and use public space in the future? Its historical beginnings were settlements at transport hubs and settings for commercial exchange. As communities and civilizations evolved, public space gained spiritual and symbolic significance.

Now there is much concern about the pressure and influence of commerce on our urban space. Still, many of the abiding icons of public space derive their character from commerce and transport. This discussion will centre on how best to manage this uneasy co-habitation to ensure the well-being of spaces, cities and communities.
